Another experiment with panoramic photography (click picture for full image.)

I have been asked to take a panoramic photo of the entire CCHS school population, so I wanted to experiment with things that are moving and to see how they will blend when I put the images together (because nobody can stand completely still, and in a group that large, somebody's gonna move.)

Moving people worked out just fine. Moving cars, not so much. Check out the red mini-SUV in the front! It looks like a tiny toy car. I would totally buy something like that, though. It would have to get crazy good gas mileage!

I guess people are smaller than cars and don't move far enough within a frame to get messed up. They do get repeated if they move from one frame to another during shooting, though -- but that isn't hard to fix in Photoshop, and nobody's going to move that much in the portrait.

I am learning how to make panoramic photos. This is kind of a cheater method -- I took several photos, pivoting from one side to the other, overlapping each photo by about 1/3. Then, I put them in photoshop (CS3) and it actually analyzes the photos and overlaps and rotates them to fit. The result is pretty neat! I like how the perspective is distorted. It would have to be, because you're looking at 180 degrees simultaneously. It reminds me of the really old panoramic photos made with special cameras back at the turn-of-the-century.

I will definitely have to experiment with this some more.

Red Berries

I don't know what these are, either, but they sure look Christmas-y, especially in front of some frosty-looking birch branches.

Whirligig

Actually, it was perfectly stationary. It just looks like it should be spinning. I have no idea what these things are called, but they grow on vines and make these feathery puffs that just seem to come out of nowhere between the trees near Charles Fork Lake.

Study of an Onion

Mmmmmmm... onions! I took a few shots in my kitchen while putting dinner together on Sunday. I love the satin-like, slightly irridescent sheen of onion skins.

This onion was especially tasty. Produce always seems to be so much better when it comes from the farmer's market, as opposed to the supermarket.

Frida Kahlo portrait exhibit

Anyone up for a roadtrip to Washington? I call shotgun!!!

I would LOOOOVE to see this exhibit! It's a collection of portraits of Frida Kahlo, and it's at the Tacoma Art Museum. The exhibit, "Frida Kahlo: Images of an Icon" runs February 3 through June 10, and includes sixty portraits of Kahlo taken throughout her life.
