Playing Hooky With Abe

Tomorrow, I'm skipping school to go hang out with Abe Lincoln.

Actually, it's for a really good reason. I'm taking my kids to Washington D.C. to see the monuments and museums. Sunday is West Virginia Day at the National Cathedral, and they're going to be participating in that as acolytes (altar boys) so we decided to make a long weekend of it and see the sights.

Some people would take issue with me pulling my kids out of school for a little mini-vacation, but since nobody does the 5th-6th grade field trip to D.C. anymore like they used to, I thought it would be ridiculous to take them to DC without spending at least one entire day touring D.C.

I'm pretty excited about it, actually. Giddy, even. A day off, plus extra time with my kids, plus history plus art? It just doesn't get any better than that. Well, actually, it could have been better -- I'm missing the Edward Hopper exhibit by a week. Of course, I don't know how much time we'll have for art exhibits, especially since the kids aren't quite old enough to really get Hopper, so I probably wouldn't have gotten to see it, anyway. So it's really better that it not be an option, because I would have to see it.

Mike is staying home with the baby, so it's just the big kids, my Mom, and myself. As much as I will miss the rest of my family for the weekend, it's going to be neat having the "big kids" to myself.

I'm finishing up my sub plans and then I'm outta here. See you all back here on Tuesday! I will probably post a photo or two. ;)

I hope you enjoy/enjoyed your DC trip! (I lived in that area for 11 years.) Back in 2004, David & I went to the Cathedral for the West Virginia celebrations. My sister and niece came over, because sis worked for the Ohio Valley Episcopal Cluster and Mary was one of the acolytes. It was a beautiful, pageant-filled service.

Too bad you'll miss the Hopper. I would have liked to have seen that. I did see the Mondrian exhibit back in 1997. Very interesting, even if my other sis and I drove Dad crazy with our "boxes-n-lines" running commentary. "YOU TWO DO NOT APPRECIATE FINE ART! YOU ARE NOT MY CHILDREN!" (evil grin)

Wave at the Ronald Reagan Building for me at 14th and Penn. That's where I used to work.

Stay safe!

Have a wonderful time, and say hi to Abe for me!

Actually I have done the taking the kids out to go some where thing too. As long as you aren't doing it every couple of weeks, I don't see that its a big deal.

When I was in 5th grade, we made the journey to DC (from Hotlanta) and I'll never forget it. We did the monuments and the Smithsonian, the zoo, it was a great time. I hope you and your kids have as much fun as I did!!!!

Juanuchis -- Thanks! I am really excited about this trip, and so are the kids! I know we're going to have a blast. My Mom knows her way around DC pretty well, so I'm sure she'll come up with the best plan to see the most stuff. Funny about the trip with your Dad! Sounds like my Dad -- he tried to impress me with his artistic knowledge once by telling me he bought a "Georgie Keefer" calendar. :) Too funny! But hey, at least he liked her art, right? It's all good.

Patty -- Thanks! Will do! Abe is first on my list of things I really want to see. I was too young when I saw it the last time, so I didn't realize how cool it was to actually be there.

ETW -- Oh, I would love to take the kids to see the zoo! It's going to be so cold, though!!! We'll have to play it by ear. THe Air & Space museum is a must-do. Regardless, we're gonna have a blast. I don't even really care what we do, as long as the kids enjoy it and see some things they'll always remember.

Hope you're having a great time! I can't wait until my kids are just a little older and I can do a nice D.C. trip with them. I'd have no qualms about taking them out of school to do ANY trip!
